From the Pulpit Search Committee

Dear Briarwood Church Family,

With great joy and gratitude to the Lord, your Pulpit Search Committee unanimously recommends for your prayer and approval Dr. Scott Redd as the next Lead Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church. From the outset, our charge has been clear: to prayerfully seek, identify, and recommend the man we believe God is calling to lead Briarwood. Your input provided to us through the congregational survey, the Discovery Weekend, and various emails and conversations has been extremely valuable and has provided us with great insight that we have used throughout this process. Over the past nine months, through countless hours of prayer, sermon review, interviews, study, and careful evaluation, we have seen God’s hand guiding us in unity and with clarity to the man we believe He has called, Dr. Scott Redd.

Time and again, we have been amazed at how the Lord has directed this process—drawing together the committee, uniting us in purpose, and leading us to Scott and his family. We are profoundly thankful for your prayers, words of encouragement, and unwavering support throughout this journey.

We invite you to get to know Scott and his family through this booklet, which includes a brief biography, background information, and an outline of the upcoming opportunities to meet them. Please be sure to review the next steps for our congregation listed on the final page. As we move forward, we ask you to continue in prayer—for the Redd family and the final steps of this process.

Let us join together in giving thanks to our Lord for His Providence, His goodness, and for the exciting days ahead at Briarwood. You have been a great encouragement to us all and a reminder that “For God’s glory, Briarwood is committed to equipping Christians to worship God and to reach Birmingham, to reach the world for Christ.”

Meet Our Pastoral Candidate – Dr. Scott Redd

Dear Briarwood family,

Twenty-five years ago, the Lord called my wife, Jennifer, and me to pursue a life of ministry in the church. Since then, we have served in six congregations—four of them within the PCA—while also engaging in academic studies and serving at Reformed Theological Seminary. Throughout these years, the Lord has deepened my love for the church and strengthened my commitment to proclaiming the whole counsel of God as a vital part of gospel discipleship in the local church.

It is with great joy and a deep sense of calling that I now come before you as the candidate for Lead Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

The legacy of Briarwood has been both rich and far-reaching—impacting lives in Birmingham, across the PCA, and throughout the world. I have long admired Briarwood’s reputation for gospel-centered leadership, exemplified by pastors Drs. Frank Barker and Harry Reeder, whose ministries stand as enduring models of faithfulness for the sake of Christ and His kingdom.

I am profoundly humbled to be considered for this role in such a vibrant and faithful church community. I believe God has much in store for Briarwood in the days ahead, and I prayerfully hope to be part of the work He is doing.

In Christ,
Scott Redd

Meet the Redd Family

Scott was born in 1974 to loving Christian parents and grew up in a supportive, faith-filled home. He is one of three children, with a brother and a sister. As part of a military family—his father served in various leadership roles in the U.S. Navy—Scott moved frequently throughout his childhood.

He attended The College of William & Mary, where he met his future wife, Jennifer (Jenn). Jenn was born in 1977 in Virginia Beach, VA. Like Scott, her family relocated a few different times growing up but spent most of her high school and college years in Virginia.

After graduating, Scott began his career at Burson-Marsteller in Washington, D.C., working in media consulting for a range of national and international corporate clients. Jenn graduated from The College of William & Mary with a degree in anthropology and spent a year working as an archaeologist before beginning a career at the National Geographic Society. During this time, Scott felt a strong call to ministry and decided to pursue theological training.

Scott and Jenn were married in June of 2000 and just three weeks later, they moved to Orlando, FL, where Scott began seminary studies at Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS). He earned his Master of Divinity in 2004 and went on to complete a Master of Arts in Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in 2007. While in seminary, he was a pastoral intern at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Orlando, FL, and after completing his work at CUA, he served as the Director of Community Life at Christ the King Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Raleigh, N.C.

In 2009, Scott returned to RTS Orlando as a faculty member and also served as Dean of Students. He completed his Ph.D. in Semitic and Egyptian Languages and Literatures in 2012. That same year, the family moved to Washington, D.C., where Scott became President of RTS Washington, D.C.

Scott is passionate about the teaching of Scripture and its relevance to all of life, particularly within the context of worshiping and learning communities. He preaches and teaches regularly at churches in the D.C. area, including Fourth Presbyterian Church (EPC) in Bethesda, MD where he is an ordained Teaching Elder, and Grace Downtown Church (PCA) in Washington, D.C. where he serves as Scholar-in-Residence. Scott also guest preaches at churches in different parts of the country in connection with his role as President of RTS. He has taught at The Catholic University of America, the Augustine Theological Institute in Malta, the International Training Institute in the Mediterranean basin, C.S. Lewis Institute, and for Third Millennium Ministries.

Scott and Jenn are the proud parents of five daughters: Naomi (21), Mary (18), Charlotte (16), Catherine (14), and Donna (10).

Comments from Friends of Briarwood

“I have had the privilege for years of knowing well Scott Redd and his family, first when Scott was a student at RTS Orlando and later when he served on the faculty there. It was an easy decision to recommend and support Scott as President of RTS Washington where he has served so effectively. Scott with his heart for missions has more recently also supported us in our ministry in Indonesia.

I have also had the privilege for years of knowing well the pastors and ministry at Briarwood Presbyterian Church. Frank Barker was a colleague of my father in the foundation of the PCA and later a significant mentor to me as a young pastor and church planter. Harry Reeder and Cindy were our closest friends and partners inviting, encouraging, and supporting our establishment of RTS Charlotte before leaving Charlotte for Briarwood. Harry has his Doctor of Ministry degree from RTS and Frank received the only honorary doctorate ever given by RTS. Over the years, I have worshipped often at Briarwood and preached there from time to time.

Knowing well both Scott and Briarwood, I am excited that Briarwood is considering calling Scott as the next pastor. May our Lord continue to richly bless Scott’s ministry and Briarwood’s outreach as you serve our Lord together.”

Robert C. (Ric) Cannada, Jr.
RTS Chancellor Emeritus

“What a happy providence this is! Scott and Jenn Redd, and their whole beautiful family have been dear friends to us now for over a decade. It’s been such a joy to share the journey of life and ministry with them. Scott has a brilliant ability to teach, inspire, and envision the next generation of leaders. Perhaps what is most unique about him is he is equally able to listen, encourage and advise whether it’s theological, pastoral, or dealing with the complexities of living faithfully in the modern world…or just raising daughters!

That is why we are thrilled that Scott is your candidate! He will bring his deep commitment to and love of Christ’s kingdom to the congregation of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.”

Keith and Kristyn Getty

“I am thrilled that your pulpit committee has unanimously recommended my good friend and trusted colleague Dr. Scott Redd to you as your new pastor. I want to commend Scott to you, and to tell you that it gives me much joy to anticipate Scott serving as Senior Pastor of Briarwood Presbyterian Church.

For over a dozen years, Scott has served with me at RTS, giving tremendous leadership as President of Reformed Theological Seminary in Washington, D.C., and I have come to know him as a man of deep biblical conviction, pastoral warmth, and theological clarity. He is a gifted preacher, a thoughtful leader, and a humble servant of Christ.

Briarwood holds a special place in my heart. Frank Barker was a friend and mentor to me in my early years of ministry, and Harry Reeder was a dear friend and partner in the work of the Gospel. We served together on the Gospel Coalition Council and in the Gospel Reformation Network, and I was honored to preach in his pulpit and speak at Briarwood conferences over the years. His loss is deeply felt across our denomination, and especially by those of us who were privileged to labor alongside him.

Knowing Scott and knowing Briarwood, I am thrilled to see the Lord bringing you together in this moment. I believe the church and its mission will flourish under Scott’s pastoral leadership, and I pray that Christ will be greatly glorified in the years ahead.”

Ligon Duncan
Chancellor & CEO, Reformed Theological Seminary

“I have known Scott Redd as my student and friend for decades. Throughout the years, he has proven himself to be a gifted and humble servant of Christ. Scott leads others by his example into unwavering devotion to God’s Word. He lovingly bears the burdens of those who are weak and weary. His heart yearns to see the Gospel proclaimed throughout the world.  I cannot imagine a man who is better suited to lead the amazing ministry of Briarwood into the future.”

Richard Pratt
President of Third Millennium Ministries

One thing I know about the women at Briarwood is that you love your Bibles and want to engage your hearts and minds to know and obey the scriptures. Because of this, I’m very excited for this new season of having Scott Redd as your pastor, teacher, leader, and friend. Having sat under Scott’s teaching, I can tell you that you will find him to be reliable and clear as well as insightful and compelling. And having partnered with him in ministry, I can tell you that you can expect him to engage with the women of your church with respect for your intellect, affirmation of your gifts, joy in your service, and compassion in your sorrows.

Nancy Guthrie

Scott’s family was in our church at Perimeter for many years beginning in the late 1990s. Scott’s parents are dear friends and his dad is as fine an elder as we have ever had. I have known Scott for many years and began talking to him about a month ago as he contacted me for my thoughts regarding his potentially becoming your pastor. I can full-heartedly and with great enthusiasm recommend Scott to you as your next pastor. I am convinced he is a man you will be glad to call your pastor and that you will love Jennifer and their five daughters.
