Briarwood’s Missions Ministry

Since Briarwood began in 1960, the Great Commission has been our heartbeat, whether internationally, in the United States, or in the Birmingham area. We partner with over 100 mission boards and organizations and with over 300 ministry staff to reach Birmingham, to reach the world for Christ. We continually challenge the members of our congregation to be personally involved through short-term ministry trips and long-term ministry service.

Our ministry focus is to be involved in church planting, church revitalization, discipleship, evangelism, leadership development, and deeds of love, mercy, and justice.

Missions Ministries

Local Mobilization Ministry

Briarwood’s Local Mobilization Ministry seeks to get Briarwood members involved in strategic service projects in the Birmingham area. These service projects range from yard work, painting, and distributing food to repair projects with local Briarwood-supported ministries and agencies. Twice a year, the Mobilization Ministry hosts IMPACT Birmingham days, where the entire Briarwood congregation is sent out in teams to serve alongside each other and help local ministry partners.

National Ministry

Briarwood’s National Ministry seeks to be obedient to the command of Jesus in Acts 1:8 to “…be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” For the National Ministries Team, the United States is our Samaria. The Team prayerfully seeks to prioritize evangelism, discipleship, leadership development and deployment, and deeds of love, mercy, and justice. We are currently able to financially partner with 105 missionaries serving with 38 different boards. The National Ministry is privileged to be a part of ministries throughout the country laboring to build Christ’s church and impact our nation.

Global Ministry

The Global Ministry exists to administrate and provide care to ministries outside the United States and cross-cultural international works within the U.S. Our ministry focus is primarily evangelism, discipleship training, equipping of Christian leaders, and deeds of love and mercy. Briarwood’s annual ministry conference helps minister to the international staff as well as provides vision and opportunities for members to serve.

International Outreach

Briarwood International Outreach (BIO) is the local, global ministry of Briarwood. BIO consists of two major focuses, our Ethnic Congregation (heart language) ministry, and our outreach to English-speaking international students.

Church Planting

Briarwood endeavors to plant biblical, healthy, multiplying churches, NOT just multiple churches. We are looking for strategic areas where no biblical, reformed witness presently exists. The key is not the number of churches that are planted, but rather seeing a movement started of exponentially and indefinitely multiplying churches. So we are seeking to plant churches built on the strategies for biblical health that will, after established, plant other churches, that will plant other churches, and we are trusting God that the multiplication process will continue.
