Taken from the script for the Briarwood Ballet production of The Promise, this book version is written by Briarwood Ballet’s Executive Director, Peggy Barker Townes. As an allegorical retelling of the story of Joseph, this book reminds us that even in the darkest of times, God is faithfully working all things together for our good, according to His promises. The Promise follows Josephine, a young girl, who during a disturbing dream receives a Promise from the Spirit of Promise that she will someday be used to rescue the members of her family. Set in the southern region the story moves from the bayou, to betrayal from her sisters, to the deck of a pirate ship, and to Carnival Isle where Josephine is enslaved. After being rescued and married to Captain William Fredrickson, she receives news of a devastating hurricane that hit the southern regions. Returning to her home, Josephine encounters her family begging for assistance. Remembering the pain that came from her sisters’ betrayal and the unfortunate adventures that followed, Josephine is reminded of the Promise. Choosing to forgive her sisters and rescue her family she remembers that “The Promise Maker is always true to His word, but His gifts sometimes appear in roundabout ways.”
