Tribute to Fred Yancy – September 20, 2019
Briarwood Church member Fred Yancey’s legacy and tenure as Head Football Coach at Briarwood will stand as one of historic excellence. All who have known him throughout his 29 years at BCS and 49 years total as a head coach will say the same thing: Coach Yancey is a man who clearly demonstrates a passion for Jesus Christ and always understands his work to be primarily a ministry of discipleship.
Coach Yancey came to Briarwood Christian School in 1990. He took BCS teams to 26 straight playoff appearances and is 3rd all-time in the state of Alabama for most wins at one school. Here, he coached three state championship teams and three state runners-up. He finished with an impressive career record of 319-115-1 (73.5%). Coach Yancey was honored as the Varsity Football National Coach of the Year by the National Christian School Athletic Association for the 2017–2018 season.
An image that forever captures his ministry is both teams meeting at mid-field after a hard-fought game. Coach Yancey would always commend the opponents and their coaches whether Briarwood had won or lost, and he would always direct the conversation to the Lord and His blessings as both teams prayed together.
Coach Yancey was more than a coach. He faithfully served BCS for more than two decades as our Dean of Students. He also coached soccer, track, and the golf teams with excellence. He has served Briarwood Church by helping lead a Sunday School class and speaking to groups all around Alabama.
On Thursday night, October 3, BCS will celebrate Coach Yancey’s impact on the lives of thousands of students and adults.
